Orientation

What can I expect from University Orientation?
The Office of Orientation encourages you to consider the possibilities that lie ahead of you as a member of the Washington University's Class of 2012. Even though many of you will have been on campus through our various special summer programs, all new students are expected to attend Orientation from August 21 – 26. During this time, you will meet the administrators, faculty, staff and current students who will help you begin to shape your Washington University experience. For more information, please visit the Office of Orientation Web site.

Registration

When can I register for classes?
On August 4 at 7:30 a.m. (CST), you can begin registering for fall classes. Our hope is for about half of engineering freshmen registration to be completed before orientation. It is important to know some questions and issues cannot be resolved until you arrive on campus for orientation. Before classes begin, there may be some popular classes, like Chemistry and Physics that appear to be full. The Freshman Registration Book gives specific instructions regarding registration for these courses. Be assured that there is plenty of time to resolve all issues and be fully registered before classes begin.

Supplies

What is the Freshman Reading Program?
As part of the 6th annual Freshman Reading Program, you will participate in dynamic and thought-provoking discussions of the book, Field Notes from a Catastrophe: Man, Nature, and Climate Change, by Elizabeth Kolbert. For more information on the Freshman Reading Program, please visit the program Web site.

What type of calculator should I purchase?
The math department recommends you wait until classes start to find out whether a calculator is important for your course. However, if you want to purchase a calculator before you arrive, consult the Math department's Web site for specific recommendations regarding calculators.

Does the School of Engineering recommend a specific type of computer for students' personal use?
