Honors
Dean's List
The Dean's List is calculated each semester and is composed of engineering freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors who achieved a 3.60 or higher grade-point average based on a minimum of 12 units of courses taken for grades (not pass/fail). An appropriate entry is added to these students' official transcripts.
The Dean's List is normally calculated approximately three weeks after each semester ends. Those students who meet the standards set above at the time the software runs are put on the Dean's List. Students who have incomplete (“I”) grades for the given semester are not eligible for the Dean’s List, because their semester GPAs are “incomplete." After their incomplete grades are changed to regular grades, and if their semester GPA’s are then at or above 3.60, students may request to have Dean’s List added to their academic records.
It sometimes happens that a faculty member will submit a grade change that results in a student now being eligible for the Dean's List, but the student was not eligible when the Dean's List was originally determined. Because the Dean's List is calculated only each each semester, the School's Registrar will not be aware that this student could now be placed on the list. Thus, it becomes the student's responsibility to inform the School's Registrar that he/she could be added to this list. Adding a student to the Dean's List means adding the appropriate entry to the student's transcript.
Senior (Final) Honors
The School’s Undergraduate Board has the responsibility for determining which students receive the designations magna cum laude, summa cum laude, and cum laude. The criterion for making the decision is academic achievement, which is the cumulative grade point average of each student at the time of graduation. Normally, the decisions are made the Monday before May Commencement, which is immediately after final grades for the spring semester are posted. Students are notified as quickly as possible by e-mail. Cumulative grade point averages of 3.6 or higher are needed in order to be considered for final honors.
