Writing Requirement


 

Composition 

[Requirement for all B.S. degrees]

 

Requirement: Every student must demonstrate proficiency in reading and writing the English language. The requirement must be completed as soon as possible. How to satisfy the English requirement:
 

  • Earn a "5" on the Advanced Placement English Examination of the College Board
  • Earn a score of 7 on the higher-level (advanced) International Baccalaureate exam
  • Earn a score of 36 on the ACT Writing exam
  • Earn a score of 750 or higher on the SAT W exam
  • Pass the School of Engineering English Composition Proficiency exam 
  • Earn a "C+" or better in Washington University's L13 100 (Writing 1)


Students who have not satisfied this requirement and who are not enrolled in ECMP 100 during their second semester on campus may be placed on "English Composition Probation," and they will remain on this probation until the requirement is satisfied.

Many courses offered by other institutions are not allowed to satisfy this requirement. If the Engineering Registrar's database does not list another institution's English course, consult with the School's English Composition coordinator, James Ballard, in Cupples II, room 11.
