Gain a Global Perspective
Washington University School of Engineering & Applied Science views international study as an integral part of today's college experience. Experiencing an academic program in another country and culture can be both career-enhancing and life-transforming.
Students have the opportunity to study abroad through the College of Arts & Sciences Overseas Program, but there are also many opportunities available only to engineering students - including summer, semester- or year-long study programs, and other specialized programs.
Students also have the opportunity to participate in a faculty-led, two-week international internship experiences. For example, juniors majoring in biomedical engineering may undertake a summer experience in Hong Kong. Accompanied by a Washington University biomedical engineering professor, these students live and study at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. During their stay, students intern in orphanages and hospitals in rural China.
In summer 2008, students visited China to meet with researchers at Peking and Tsinghua Universities - both McDonnell International Scholars Academy partner institutions - to learn about global environmental issues. The group visited government air-quality monitoring stations and key state air pollution control laboratories. Prior to the trip, students took part in seminars on history and politics, transcontinental transport of air pollution, environmental informatics and power supply in China.
If you want to experience one of the top world-recognized engineering educational institutions, you may want to consider the summer program with the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay. You may also attend Bogaziçi University, located in Istanbul, which is one of Turkey's preeminent educational institutions. Engineering courses at IIT-Bombay and Bogaziçi are taught in English.
The School of Engineering & Applied Science also works with the Arts & Sciences Overseas Programs Office, to offer additional study aboard opportunities in many disciplines and foreign languages.
Special Scholarships for Studying Abroad
